Misunderstanding leads to call for Aust’s disengagement

The situation arose when the Australian Defence Force helicopter that was supposed to be used for emergency on Manam Island could not be used today.

Madang Provincial Police Commander, Chief Inspector Ben Neneo, said they were told by the Australian Defence Force that there were no protocol to use the helicopter.

PPC Neneo said he was confused as to what protocol they (Australian Defence Force) were referring to during this time of disaster.

Digicel assists Manam islanders

Lorna McPherson, Digicel PNG's Senior Vice President and Chief Sales Officer, said the company's immediate concern was that locals on the island are safe, and are able to communicate with authorities for help.

Manam volcano in Madang Province erupted again at about 5am on August 25th.

Peter Sukua, a local leader from Baliau village, called this newsroom from the island to report that the volcano spewed ashes and lava.

He reported destruction to gardens and main village tracks have closed due to fallen trees.

He said more than 2,000 villagers in his village are in shock of what has happened and are currently evacuating the island.
He is calling on the Disaster Authority in Madang to quickly respond. 

Good news for Manam Islanders

Almost 13 years later, these people still lack the basic services; some even choosing to ignore the risks and move back to the northern end of the Island.

These Islanders may have hope still as the office of Planning has directed for preparation for a restoration bill for the recent Kadovar Volcano disaster issue, which will benefit them as well. 

Minister for Planning Richard Maru in a statement on Monday established a new Kadovar restoration Authority Bill to be tabled in Parliament to establish the required restoration Authority.
