Nation’s capital observes Good Friday

Christians woke up as early as 3am to make the trip to the Queen Mary of the Pacific Church in Waigani and follow the cross as it journeyed around the nation’s capital.

The cross will go through Waigani CBD then around Gordon’s through to Waigani Drive and end up at Gerehu stage 6 for the traditional Easter Friday mass.

Catholic parishioners, families, Bomana inmates, armed service representatives as well as the general public were out in full force as a show of faith to mark this iconic religious event.

Stations of the Cross come to an end in the Capital

Despite the extreme heat of the sun, parishioners reenacted the passion and suffering of Christ as the crowd looked on to witness the scene played by the youths.

Sir John Cardinal Ribat made an entrance to bless the Cross before it was to be brought into the church.

The congregation came in numbers escorted by traffic police to the final station which was taken up the parishioners of Mary Queen of Pacific.

This is the first time the Station of the Cross has taken a route up the Poreporena Freeway with a crowd numbering up to more than a thousand at one time.

Stations of the Cross now on last legs

Traffic police escort drove ahead to clear traffic as the congregation move into the final stretch of walk towards the last few stations.

The cross is currently at the 12th Station just outside Vision City with more people joining the procession or march.

This is the last leg of the walk as the congregation carries the Cross  and head for Mary Queen of Pacific Parish.

Good Friday and Columbus Day renamed by 'inclusive' US city

Mayor John Hamilton said the move would "better reflect cultural sensitivity in the workplace", local media said.

Bloomington is a traditionally liberal city. Its county gave Hillary Clinton 58.6% in the presidential election.

But the move sparked a backlash on social media, with opponents condemning it as an act of political correctness.

The change was announced on Friday by Mr Hamilton in a memo to city employees.
