22yo Miss Frangipani crowned

Twenty-two-year-old Ellen Morgan has been crowned Miss Frangipani; 24 years after the last crowning of a Miss Frangipani in Rabaul in 1994.

Morgan, who works at the Kokopo Beach Bungalow, won the title against seven other contestants in front of about 300 people at the Ralum Club on July 5.

Member for Gazelle, Jelta Wong, announced that the revived Miss Frangipani will now be held annually and the winner will be Miss East New Britain, who will contest in the Miss PNG Pacific Islands Pageant.

Member for Kokopo and Minister for Culture and Tourism, Emil Tammur, who also attended the crowning last Friday, announced a commitment of K50,000 towards next year's pageant.

Chairperson of the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant (PNG) Committee, Molly O'Rourke, expressed her support for Miss Frangipani and Miss East New Britain as it allowed the MPIP PNG to have representation in other provinces of the country.

“After all, our pageant is called Miss PNG and we are very delighted that East New Britain has come on board to promote the province's tourism potential with a brand ambassador every year,” she said.

Morgan, a certified scuba diver who has taken tourists out to various locations in Kokopo and Rabaul on numerous occasions, said she was overwhelmed with the win but added she was looking forward to new challenges.

“This is something out of my comfort zone,” Morgan said.

“My thanks go to a wonderful support team of family, friends and the Miss Frangipani organising committee, who I know they will be there for me.”
